850 Voices: San Quentin Residents Want a Farmers Market

850 residents at San Quentin State Prison signed a petition calling for a resident-led Farmers Market program where they can purchase fresh produce at a profit-neutral price. The petition represents one of the largest collective actions by incarcerated people in support of food justice in California.

The proposed SQ Farmers Market would offer avocados, cilantro, strawberries, walnuts, and other healthy foods. It would operate as a separate program from the facility cafe, with pricing set to cover costs only — because health and wellness should be affordable.
